This weekend I got to embrace my inner pirate in a closed beta of the new game Skull and Bones from Ubisoft.

It was a fun experience, and I am looking forward to the game. You start with a very basic ship with no weapons. I find I enjoy killing Sharks with spears. The harvesting of fruit and plants seems pretty strange. Upgrading my first ship takes me longer than it should but the up-side is that without knowing I have already gathered all that I need to create three cannons and a number of cannon balls. Now the real fun begins. I start by hunting gathering ships, again something I find I really enjoy and I spend most of my time doing. I like picking of a ship caught alone.

Aside from sinking ships with cannons. Your pirate crew can grapple a ship and board an enemy. Unfortunately I was never able to get this to work properly instead always switching to my Telescope. So I found this frustrating. From the beginning grinding is part of this game, and I worry that it would get frustrating. Particularly for things like Cannon Balls and other basics.

I can see myself playing this game in short but intense bursts. I look forward to my next session.

Captain of the ship “Shadow”.
